What is NYC?
The National Youth Congress is the Philippines’ premier economics forum for top high school students. The central goal of NYC is to annually convene students from all over the Philippines and provide an avenue for the youth to engage in critical discourse on pressing issues through an economic perspective. The core thrust of the National Youth Congress is to foster ideas and inspire progress for its yearly influx of delegates through competitions, talks, and collaborative activities seeking to cultivate camaraderie amongst a diverse set of participants.
Over the years, NYC has become a widely anticipated event. Tackling highly relevant problems such as national development, digitalization, and globalization, NYC has grown in prestige nationwide through its continuous expansion, accreditation, and hosting of several distinguished speakers.
Now in its 18th year, NYC continues its legacy of delivering relevant and comprehensive discussions by centering on development economics. With the theme DESCEND TO ASCEND: Moving towards Genuine Development for an Empowered Nation, NYC 18 aims to highlight the importance of economics in defining, measuring, and attaining genuine development to solve our nation’s problems.
What’s in store for me if I join NYC?
The National Youth Congress strives to provide an avenue where students from all over the country can gather, collaborate, and learn about the important issues of Philippine society. With this, NYC 18 has prepared various talks, competitions, and collaborative activities to encourage the youth to engage in critical and insightful discourses, and aid them in their role as future economists, visionaries, and nation-builders. Listed below are what’s in store for our delegates:
Who can join and how do I join NYC?
The 18th National Youth Congress is open to all Grade 10-12 students from all high schools (public and private) in the Philippines, accredited by the Department of Education (DepEd). Schools who want to take part in the Congress may pre-register here to receive an invite.
What happens after we pre-register?
Your school will receive a formal invite to the event. The invitation contains the program proper, registration instructions, and policies for the 18th National Youth Congress. However, pre-registering does not secure your slot or your commitment to attending the event. This will only subscribe you to receiving an invitation from our School Relations Team. To become an official delegate, you will have to complete the actual registration process.
Can I register as an individual independent student?
Unfortunately, the National Youth Congress is not open to students who seek to register as individual independent delegates. The National Youth Congress strives towards good representation of all regions in the Philippines. To achieve this, we require a school delegation with a minimum of five (5) to a maximum of seven (7) students to join. Students from the same school only need to register once.
I'm currently a college student. Is it possible for me to join the National Youth Congress?
The National Youth Congress strictly accommodates only Grade 10-12 students from high schools around the country. Its activities, competitions, and discussions are tailored for the said audience and thus, college students are not permitted to join.
How much do I pay for NYC?
Normally, NYC offers multiple packages that vary in the inclusions that the school chooses to avail (field trip, accommodation, and/or registration fee). However, just like last year, NYC 18 will continue to utilize online platforms in reaching out to the youth across the country. Thus, participation will still be FREE OF CHARGE as NYC persistently strives for a more inclusive Congress.
When and where is NYC going to be held?
The 18th National Youth Congress will be held on November 20, 2021 (Saturday) and November 21, 2021 (Sunday) primarily via Zoom.
What is the NYC theme about?
With the theme DESCEND TO ASCEND: Moving towards Genuine Development for an Empowered Nation, the 18th National Youth Congress aims to highlight the importance of economics in defining, measuring, and attaining genuine development to solve the problems of our nation. The Philippines has been long defined by poverty — millions of out-of-school youth, inaccessible healthcare, and rampant corruption. Now, as COVID-19 has shown that health, economy, education, and all facets of our humanity are intertwined, economies must now focus on improving each sector of society in order to truly uplift the nation.
This 18th National Youth Congress, we seek to explore the definitions of development and the role that economics plays in attaining a better life for all. Through delving into the field of Development Economics, we spark a critical discourse on the varying ideas and interpretations surrounding it, including the challenges being faced in pursuing its objective of alleviating poverty and improving the human condition. Likewise, we will initiate discourse on the different ways Development Economics has shaped our society, and how it will do so in the future. Ultimately, NYC’s goal is to train the youth to become conscientious and informed catalysts for change, who will utilize development practices to improve the nation’s future quality of life.
Can my friends and I still apply even if we are not endorsed by school?
Students from the same school will only be permitted to register if they comply with these two conditions:

- SPARK: The SPARK talks will feature keynote speeches focusing on specific issues relating to the main NYC theme to be given by renowned experts within the chosen fields. It serves to shed light on the challenges that the nation faces and seeks to inspire the youth to be proactive in finding solutions through the insights shared by the speakers.
- LAUNCH: LAUNCH will consist of various workshops that will equip high school students with practical knowledge and skills in their field of interest. This will also be an opportunity for open exchanges and interesting discussions among delegates.
- OPPORTUNITIES FAIR: The Opportunities Fair is an online fair featuring our various partners and sponsors. Through these partner organizations, delegates will be presented chances to partake in value-adding activities that will educate them about societal issues.
- ONLINE AMAZING RACE: The Online Amazing Race is an opportunity for delegates from all over the country to collaborate in a series of challenging yet exciting activities designed to hone their creative and analytical abilities.
- SMART COMPETITION: The SMART activity is an idea pitch challenge that aims to harness the youth’s creativity and innovation in addressing issues relevant to the NYC theme. Finalists will be tasked with developing their ideas into a pitch presentation to be delivered to a panel of renowned judges.
- QUIZ BEE: NYC Economics Quiz Bee, one of the largest academic competitions for Economics in the country, is an inter-school contest where delegates will be tested rigorously on their knowledge, understanding, and overall application of economic concepts.
- INK: NYC’s annual essay writing contest will continue to give delegates a platform to share their perspectives and ideologies on pressing questions and topics covered in the theme. Winning works for each category will be published on the NYC website and social media accounts.
- GLIMPSE: GLIMPSE, NYC’s annual video making competition, provides delegates an opportunity to explore particular phenomena faced by the nation and produce outputs that aim to educate and spread awareness on these issues.
- CAPTURE: CAPTURE seeks to showcase the participants’ talents in creating thought-provoking, visually pleasing, yet easily digestible digital materials geared towards educating the public on topics covered in the NYC theme.

Students from the same school will only be permitted to register if they comply with these two conditions:
- Their school administration is made aware of this activity;
- There is a teacher-in-charge from the school who will fill out the NYC registration form for them.
